MS 4965 comprises correspondence of Brian Fitzpatrick, Walter Stolting, Marshall Lucas and others associated with the Australian Council for Civil Liberties, and records and news cuttings relating to the Council, including minutes, 1935-1937. There are also drafts of radio documentaries and Fitzpatrick's semi-autobiographical novel The colonials. In addition, publications by Fitzpatrick and photographs of him, personal correspondance, ca. 1942-1965, personal documents, 1925-1964, and complete sets of Labor newsletter, 1958-1965 (59 boxes).

Author, historian and journalist. Brian Charles Fitzpatrick was one of the founders of the Australian Council for Civil Liberties in 1936. He was general secretary of the Council from 1939 until his death in 1965. As an author, Fitzpatrick wrote British imperialism and Australia, 1783-1833: an economic history of Australasia (1939), A short history of the Australian labor movement (1940), Readings in Australian history (1965), A history of the Australian people (1965), The British Empire in Australia: an economic history, 1834-1939 (1969), among other publications.
