Professor John Molony, historian speaks of his Irish heritage; his family background; his grandfather's involvement in the Eureka Stockade and other tales of him; his Catholicism and early prejudice he experienced; his childhood in Sealake, Vic. during the 1930's, then in Melbourne; his father's work history; the lasting effect of living through economic deprivation; his schooling; interest in Australian Rules; entering the priesthood at the Jesuit seminary Corpus Christi at Werribee and his education there; going to study at Propaganda in Rome in 1947 and his experiences there; reminiscences of Pope Pius 12; his canonisation in 1950; being a canon lawyer in Boston, USA; his impoverished parish in Rome; returning to Australia to be assistant priest at Ballarat; involvement in Catholic Action and contact with Bob Santamaria and the Movement; the role of the DLP in Australian politics; experience with Mysticism; celibacy; disillusion and leaving the priesthood in 1964 and the consequences that followed; his academic career at ANU; fellow academics; his legal marriage, dispensation from celibacy & church marriage; reforms in the Catholic church; conversation about CAE/ANU amalgamation; living in Canberra; his publications; meeting Bob Hawke; Xavier Herbert, Patrick White and Sidney Nolan; writing "I am Ned Kelly" and "Eureka"; politics and the ALP; his feelings about life.
