Summary

Ted Wray speaks of his father's work in the mines in Lithgowin the early 1900's; his schooling at Lithgow; leaving school at 14 years of age; working in the Small Arms Factory in Lithgow, stacking charges at S.A.F.; working in the mines starting at 18 years of age; relates stories about pit ponies - the work they did - treatment of the ponies; lighting & ventilation in the mines - bord and pillar mining; dust march; conditions in the mines; earning the magic dollar before WW2; 1949 strike; talks about Jock King (Secretary of the Miners Federation); support of the community in the 1949 strike; conditions in the mines - not many accidents using the pick / shovel; no superstitions; no fighting / disagreements in the pit; 8 hour working day strike; bringing in the machinery into the mine; miners in more danger now; more coal -more bonus - risk taking; pit bonus shared.

Wray speaks of the characters living in town; sport played - local town competition - story; affect on Lithgow of steelworks moving - some people following the steelworks; fragment of song When we get that tuppence back Charlie dear; information on the 35 hour week - conditions; retiring in 1964; Jock King helping out the pensioners.
