Journal of a voyage from London to Melbourne on the "Agamemnon" (Nov. 1871-January 1872), travels in Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and New Zealand, voyage from Auckland to Honolulu on "Nevada" (April-May 1872). The entries are very detailed and refer inter alia to shipboard life, sightings of birds and fishes, ships newspaper, books read, impressions of Melbourne, Victorian statistics and facts, visits to concerts, opera, botanic gardens, impressions of Ballarat, Bendigo, Dandenongs, Launceston, Hobart, Sydney, Parramatta, Blue Mountains, Australian Museum, travels in South Island of New Zealand, impressions of Invercargill, Dunedin, Christchurch, Hokitika goldfield, meeting with uncle Richard Bethell at Burnham, travels in Hawaii, topography of Hawaii.

Traveller. Eldest son of William F. Bethell of Rise Park, Hull, Yorkshire. Educated at Edinburgh Academy. Later a J.P. and Deputy Lieutenant of Yorkshire. His uncle, Richard Bell, was an early settler in Canterbury, New Zealand.
