-
The setting of this story is the vast and remote area, seldom visited by most Australians, in the middle of their country, and know to them simply as âÂÂThe CentreâÂÂ. Hannah Maine, leaving school in Melbourne, is to stay with her Aunt Elspeth, the nursing sister at a tiny isolated settlement in the Centre, until she is old enough to begin her own hospital training. She and her great friend Mary, on a holiday visit, fell that they are in for adventures, but little do they suspect what sensational and terrifying situations they are to face. The journey into the Centre is a fascinating experience for the two girls, but the real call on their nerve and ingenuity comes later when the aircraft in which they are flying over desolate mountain country is forced down in a mysterious and unknown Deep Valley where live a lost tribe of aborignines. Here the women wield the power and the men are pampered and held in affectionate contempt. Hannah, with her wonderful red hair and ventriloquial powers, receives special reverence. She has, however, to overcome the hatred of the ruler of the tribe, and some desperate and seemingly hopeless emergencies arise before their rescue is ultimately assured. -- Dust jacket.
