Ralph Harry, Australian diplomat, talks about the origins of his interest in politics and the diplomatic service; experiences at Oxford and joining the Dept of External Affairs in 1940. He then describes his experiences in Canada; Commonwealth Air Training Plan; atomic energy; working with H. V. Evatt; New York and Australia's activities in the United Nations from 1946-49. Harry then discusses the independence of Indonesia; Japanese peace settlement and his appointment as Australian Consul-General in Geneva in 1953. He then talks about his posting to Singapore; involvement in review of ASIS (Australian Secret intelligence Service) and his return to Dept of External Affairs as First Assistant Secretary.
Harry then describes his work as Ambassador to Brussels in 1965 which also involved working with European Economic Communities. He then describes his experiences in Vietnam as Ambassador in Saigon and his last diplomatic posting in New York, 1975-78 as UN representative. Harry also discusses East Timor; terrorism; Papua New Guinea; his involvement with Special Session on Disarmament in 1978 and his interest in Esperanto.
