In-letters to 1839 are grouped by type of correspondent . From 1840 New General Series begins and arrangement is chronological. Contains correspondence with various departments of the Admiralty, and other government agencies, admirals' despatches, captains' and lieutenants' letters, letters from private individuals, organisations and companies, reports of courts martials, orders-in-council, and other records. Papers relate to policy, exploration and surveying, incidents arising from the protection of British political and trading interests, administration of the Navy and its various departments and the command of individual ships.
