- This was, until its demolition two years ago, said to be Melbourne’s oldest house. It stood at the corner of Flinders Lane and Howitt Place, near the present Department of Customs building. It was brought out to Melbourne in sections in the hold of the ship which brought out Dr. Howitt in 1839. The site on which it stood was then bushland, and its grounds probably extended down to the banks of the Yarra.--Typed label.
