MS 9664 consists mainly of correspondence, with sketches, drawings, poems, songs, edited text, editors' suggestions, newspaper articles, invitations, notices of writers' gatherings, cards, and invitations to speak at functions interspersed throughout the papers. There are letters relating to the English folklore periodical, Dear Mr Thoms, mainly with Gillian Bennett, and other letters and papers relating to folklore. Includes letters from authors, poets, publishers and editors, colleges, universities, government departments, performing arts groups, politicians, Queensland Folk Federation, and the Braille and Talking Book Library.

There are five folders of correspondence between Scott and Ron Edwards dating from 1978-2002, which include verse and illustrations, but other letters between them are also interfiled in the rest of the collection. Other correspondents include Patsy Adam Smith, Anne Bell, Geoffrey Blainey, Hesba Brinsmead, Nancy Cato, Bruce Dawe, Cedric Emmanuel, Nancy Keesing, Wendy Lowenstein, Hugh Lunn, Ward McNally, Walter McVitty, Allan Marshall, Lilith Norman, Eleanor Spence, Colin Thiele, Patricia Wrightson, Edel Wignell and Judith Wright (6 boxes).

The Acc11.067 instalment comprises draft manuscripts of various works, including "My uncle Arch" stories, "Many kinds of magic" and others, correspondence, relating mostly to publications, research for books and material relating to conferences (5 boxes).


William Neville (Bill) Scott was an Australian author, songwriter, poet, children's author, biographer, folklorist, radio script writer and historian. He was also a contributor to literary publications including Overland, The bulletin, Quadrant, Folklore round table (USA), Reading folklore, and Dear Mr Thoms (Great Britain). Scott won the Mary Gilmore award in 1964 and Literary Board grants in 1976, 1979 and 1981. In 1992 he received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to Australian folklore. He was married to author Mavis (Dora) Scott.
