Biography/History

The Workers Party was formed on Australia Day 1975, with John Singleton as founding director. In 1976 the party campaigned in by-elections in NSW. It was changed to the Progress Party in 1977 after objections to the name and constitution. The original name was intended to refer to people who supported the free enterprise system against excessive government and taxation. Dr Barry Bracken was chairman of the Progress Party.
