Argues that it is important for non Indigenous teachers to make explicit to Indigenous students the structures and forms of 'essayist' literacy (i.e. a particular way of writing, reading, speaking and thinking associated with higher education and other domains such as the bureaucratic and administrative) which is a powerful form of social and cultural capital; discusses strategies to achieve this for Indigenous students.
