Macintyre, an anthropologist, speaks of her family background and working class upbringing in Melbourne, her education at MacRobertson Girls' High, her Arts degree from University of Melbourne and postgraduate work at Cambridge, 1972-75 and 1977-78, the influence of Sir Edmund Leach lecturing on women and society, how she balances marriage and a career, gaining the Certificate of Social Anthropology from Cambridge, took an appointment as a tutor in history and women's studies at Murdoch University in 1976 and returned there in 1979, undertook a doctoral scholarship at the Australian National University, 1983-83, making her first visits to Tubetube, Papua New Guinea, accepted in 1984 position at Monash as a Post-doctoral Research Fellow in Anthropology, her work among refugees from El Salvador, lecturer in sociology at La Trobe University, 1985-93, developing her interest in gender issues and migrant women's health and welfare, continued work on the issues of women among the Tubetube people.
Macintyre from 1995 undertook a social impact study of the Misima gold mine in the Milne Bay province of Papua New Guinea as well as an ongoing study of the social impact of Lihir gold mine in the New Ireland province of New Guinea, also the status of women in Papua New Guinea since their independence in 1975, the discrimination of women in academia noting differences between universities and departments, her ongoing interest in women's issues.
