- Summary:

1) Twenty letters 1840-49, written mainly by Georgiana Lowe to her sister-in-law Agnes Lowe and a relative, Mrs Sherbrooke. The letters describe life in Sydney, conditions in the colony in general, and political developments. 2) Miscellanea, including notes on debates at Oxford 1831, in which Lowe participated; newspaper cuttings, including material on Australia and items of biographical interest; letter 28 July 1896 from J. Chamberlain containing reminiscences of Robert Lowe.
- Biography/History:

From 1842 to 1850 Robert Lowe lived with his first wife, nee Georgiana Orred, in Sydney, where he practiced as a lawyer. He was a nominated member of the New South Wales Legislative Council 1843-44 and an elected member from 1846 until he left the colony. Georgiana was closely involved in her husband's work because he had poor eyesight and she often read and wrote for him.
