Dr Manchester, astronomer and Chief Research Scientist at the Australia Telescope National Facility, speaks of his background and childhood, religion, schooling, early influences, university studies, move into radio astronomy, Parkes Radio Telescope, pulsars and pulsars research, post-doctoral work in the U.S., publications, CSIRO Radiophysics Astrophysics Division, establishment and management of the Australia Telescope for radio astronomy, being awarded Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, Astronomical Society of Australia, funding in astronomy, current high quality Australian astronomy research, crisis in science funding, SETI Institute research at Parkes, problem of Australian industry maintaining international competitiveness without creating a underclass of unemployable people, overexploitation of natural resources, ALP and Coalition support for science, uranium mining, alliance with the United States, current political system and possibility of a Republic, move towards Asia, environmental problems, role of economic growth, women in science, abortion, students, science and the school system, teaching of science and PhDs in university.
