Colin Newsome, author and storyteller, born 1916, in Glen Innes speaks about attending school at Wellingrove; his first job working for his father farming sheep and cattle; his grandfather financing properties in the family; the era of the Depression; beginning work for Colin Ward; train-jumping and musical influences (Tex Morton); enlisting in the army; an experience of sailing to New Guinea; recites part of a poem he wrote about the battalions; talks generally about the fighting in New Guinea and being in New Guinea for two weeks but not taking part in the fighting; leaving the army and beginning work as a shearer; the record numbers of sheep sheared by himself and others.
Newsome speaks about Moree and gambling; his career as a boxer; taking lessons in boxing and the techniques; riding in bush carnivals as a buck jumper; boxing once with Jimmy Sharman; winning a bullock riding championship; the competitions and bulls used for buck jumping; more about boxing for Sharman and travelling with circus trains; learning to wrestle; recites a poem written about the 'Gympie Giant'; the life of a showman; the slang used by show people; spending two years with Jimmy Sharman; a yarn about Sharman; the shearer's strikes; poems written about the industry; his part in negotiations and describes an incident where shearers marched against employers; going to the High Court over wage dispute; life member of Labor Party and shearer's Union.
