Summary

The papers in MS 9691 document Fry's tertiary education at the University of Sydney, some aspects of his academic career and his historical writings. They include correspondence, references, applications for scholarships and appointments, research notes and copies of documents, drafts of essays, articles and papers, reviews, newspaper cuttings and oral histories. The correspondents include Manning Clark, John M. Ward, Jim Hagan, Russel Ward, John Merritt, Graeme Powell and Royden Harrison.

The Acc06/61 instalment comprises papers relating to family and early life; papers relating to Sydney University and life in the 1940s; ANU seminar papers and ANZAAS papers, 1954-1957; files on thesis-writing, c. 1972; and, school broadcasts, 1970-1971.

The Acc08/68 instalment includes research material, drafts, illustrations and other papers relating to Fry's book, An airman far away.

Biography/History

Historian and academic. Eric Charles Fry was lecturer and later reader in the Department of History, Australian National University, from 1959 until his retirement in 1986. In 1961 Fry founded the Australian Society for the Study of Labour History with Robin Gollan and Fry held the positions of Secretary and President. Most of Fry's writings were in the field of labour and urban history. He was the editor of, Rebels and radicals (1983), and, Common cause: essays in Australian and New Zealand labour history (1986). In his retirement Fry wrote An airman far away (1993).
