- Summary:
-
Finke is a name for the community who lives in the Aputula. (The community, which was called Finke until the 1980s, began as a railway siding on the Central Australian Railway). The community takes its name from the usually dry Finke River (one of the oldest river systems in the world dating back 350 million years) that meanders by the area traditionally known as Aputula. The name Aputula is still used by the approximately 160 local Pitjantjatjara, Yankunytjatjara and Luritja, speakers when referring to their community of Finke. Aputula also refers to remote Indigenous Australian community in the Northern Territory of Australia.
