Archdeacon Potter came to Victoria in 1851. He was appointed to Christ Church, Ballaarat in 1855. Ballaarat was then in its infancy and services were held at first in a tent. Archdeacon Potter was instrumental in developing the cure and building Christ Church Pro-Cathedral. He remained incumbent until his death in 1881.
