1 copy of the diary and 2 copies of the transcript. Spencer-Smith's original diary is written out in pencil in one of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic specially bound books which Shackleton had prepared for sledging expeditions both to the Weddell Sea and to the Ross Sea. The diary covers two journeys: the initial one made in January 1915 to lay a depot at 80s; the second journey started in October 1915 and going through to March, 1916. The last entry in the diary is made on 7th March, two days before Spencer-Smith died and almost at the end of the journey.
