(1) 1887 diary traces Walter's journey from England to Western Australia, via Canada, U.S.A., the Pacific and the east coast of Australia. (2) 1888 records Walter's period after he met his brother in Western Australia and his settling in the south-west region of the State. The diary ends as he proposes to his future wife, Lou Thomson, granddaughter of John Septimus Roe. (3) 1893 records Walter's trip from Plymouth, England to Perth, following a trip home to England with his wife and first daughter Mary Matilda (Meta), who was born in 1892 at Bunbury. Travelled on SS Austral. Details relating to the family accompany the diaries.

John R. Walter was the great grandfather of Mrs. Loucille Foreman of Red Hill. He married the granddaughter of John Septimus Roe, a surveyor with Capt. Stirling and a founder of Western Australia. Walter farmed at Bridgetown, W.A.
