Dr Oats was born in South Australia 1912. He studied at the University of Adelaide & then at Adelaide Teachers College. After a few years on the staff of Adelaide High School, he spent two years at the International School of Geneva in Switzerland, in the first years of WWII. Late 1940 he was Deputy Chief Escort of 477 child evacuees from Britain to Australia on a ten week voyage by sea. In 1942 Oats was appointed Headmaster of Kings College in Adelaide and from 1945 to his retirement in 1973, he was Headmaster of the Friends School in Hobart. Dr Oats has held many positions, from President of the New Education Fellowship through to the position of President of the Quaker Service in Australia. He is a founding member, Fellow & former President of the Australian College of Education.
