Dr John Armstrong, retired pathologist and AIDS researcher, reflects on his HIV research at Royal Perth Hospital, including: his medical background; electron microscopy research; first awareness of AIDS as a disease; presentation of first AIDS cases at RPH; lymph node analysis; locating retrovirus type cells; contrast in in vivo and in vitro research findings; dendritic cells; sereological testing; non-lymphocytic cell tropism theory; research funding; interaction between retrovirus and dendritic cells; Human Immunodeficiency Virus; prospects for an HIV vaccine; Western Australian AIDS Advisory Committee; place of his research in international AIDS research; lesions; breast milk transmission of the virus; testing issue; attitude of Hospital administration and staff to AIDS research; clinical precautions; autopsy policy; media reporting of AIDS; origins of the disease; alternative findings of HIV research.
