Summary

Gupapuyny is a widely spoken Aboriginal language of Eastern Arnhemland, N.T. Australia. It is the first language of several hundred Yolnu people, and is part of a much wider system in which it is understood by several thousand speakers of other Yolnu languages. This systemic introduction to Gupapuynu Grammar was first prepared in 1960 by Beulah Lowe, for the Methodist Church in North Australia. Thirty years later it is still the best students' grammar available in a Yolnu language. During the mission days, many Gupapuyn people moved to Milininbi where this book was written. The cover design depicts the tamarind tree and the barramundi which represent both the Walamanu people, landowners at Milingimbi, and their grandchildren, the Gupapuynu.
