Summary

A collection of 48 cutting books on boxing, assembled by Merv Williams. These consist of lists of matches and their results. Some volumes are arranged chronologically, but most are in alphabetical order. There are two groups of boxing records: (i) Fourteen volumes bearing names or titles on the covers such as "Index records", "Record index" or "Catalogued records". The volumes are for the dates 1883; 1887; 1899-1930; 1901-1910; 1923-1927; 1920s; 1930-1935; 1930-1940; 1940s 1942-1948; 1950s; 1960s; 1970s and one undated volume. (ii) Thirty-four volumes bearing various titles: "Presscuttings, "Newspaper Cuttings", "Cuttings and notes". These cover the period 1895 to 1979. Some volumes have overlapping date coverage e.g. 1924-1931, 1925-1947. These volumes are a record of fight reports, biographies of boxers and writings of Merv Williams in the Sporting globe. All are cuttings pasted in ledger books. About 10 volumes of these cutting books include indexes. Merv Williams' own contribution in this collection commences in the volumes for the 1930s onwards. Earlier volumes were acquired from sporting friends. Other items in the collection are:- "Rules and regulations of the Boxing Commission" for Hawaii, circa 1955; typescript draft of a novel (untitled, no author); "Souvenir of the Sydney Amateur Gymnastic Club", for 1890.
