Summary

MS 6946 comprises personal and business correspondence, manuscripts, typescripts, galley proofs, journal articles, newscuttings, notes, printing quotes, reports and reviews. The papers reflect Hugh Anderson's diverse range of interests as a teacher, writer, historian, publisher, folklorist and also his interest in Chinese writings. The major correspondents are John Meredith, Ellie Pullin, Colin Roderick, John S. Ryan, Australia-China Council, Australia Council Literature Board, Australian Folk Trust, New South Wales University Press, National Library of Australia, Pan Books, State Library of New South Wales and Ure Smith (90 boxes, 20 fol. boxes).

The Acc04/186 instalment includes a range of papers dating from the 1950s, the main groups comprising papers relating to Anderson's books and publications of the Red Rooster Press; scrapbooks containing copies of broadsides, music and related material, mostly obtained from overseas libraries and archives; correspondence; further papers relating to Anderson's visits to China; and, miscellaneous papers on folklife, copyright and other subjects (2 cartons, 29 other boxes, 5 oversize cartons).

The Acc06/138 instalment comprises research files, including reasearch material, drafts, correspondence and other papers relating to numerous projects, interests and activities (13 boxes).

Biography/History

Folklorist, historian, writer, editor and publisher. Hugh Anderson has written over 100 books in fields as diverse as Australian colonial history, particularly Victorian history, biography, bibliography, folklife, popular music, literary criticism and school texts. As a publisher, he has produced a number of historical and folkloric studies. In 1978 Anderson set up his own publishing firm under the name of Red Rooster Press.
