Summary

"Patrick Ritchie was a young farmer of Dubbo, New South Wales, who saw an appeal for assistance for the Roman Catholic Mission on Bathurst Island, off the coast of the Northern Territory. Unable to give money, he decided to offer his services instead, and set out for the Mission intending to stay one year, during which, time he proposed to instruct the natives in farming me thods. He stayed four years, and left then with the utmost regret. In 'North of the Never Never', he tells of his four years at the Mission, and it is one of the most interesting narratives we have read for some time. He has the descriptive gift, and this, coupled with many fine illustrations, enables the reader to form an excellent picture of life as lived by the Bathurst Islanders. He taught them how to handle stock, reclaiming dairy cattle that had been allowed to run wild, initiated them into the art of farming, fencing, roadmaking and so on. In return they made him their friend and confidant, revealing to him a great deal of native custom and superstition that would not normally be told to a white man." -- book review, the 'Albany Advertiser', Monday 19 November, 1934.
