Soldier, public servant, systems analyst, railway historian and writer. Jim Harvey was born to Ronald McPherson Harvey from Adelaide and Joan Mary Temple Cox from Hobart. He attended Melbourne Grammar School and in World War Two served in home defence, before taking part in the Tarakan campaign in Borneo. Returning to Mebourne after the war, he married Lois George, who had served in the Australian Women’s Army. Studying at university on a returned serviceman’s scheme, Harvey then worked for the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works for the rest of his career, initially as a clerk in construction, and later as a systems analyst in electronic data processing. Harvey co-founded the Victorian Division of the Australian Railway Historical Society, and became a life member of the Society in 1974. Having served in the army in the Northern Territory when Darwin was bombed, he developed an interest in the Northern Australian Railway, at this stage a single line between Darwin and Birdum. Harvey wrote three books on northern Australian railways, contributed to a book on Bendigo railways, and edited his mother’s memoirs: all of these publications are held by the National Library.
