Correspondence and fragments of files, engagement diaries, files on conferences, conventions, trips and tours, speeches, articles and broadcasts, personal documents, election propaganda, subject files, photographs, cartoons, sketches, presscuttings, printed matter, miscellaneous material. There is also material on the Democratic Labor Party, the Queensland Labor Party and the Royal Visit, 1954. Amongst the miscellaneous group are two visitor's books, a tape of "This Day Tonight", 2-3 April 1974, and 2 discs (sound recordings) of the State Election "Round Table Discussion", 1956. There is very little material on the period Gair was Ambassador. There is a volume of 6 special issues of the Courier Mail, 1859-1959.

Gair was born in Queensland in 1901. Gair was MLA for South Brisbane, 1932-1960. He was Secretary for Mines 1942-1947, for Labour and Employment (1947-1950); was Treasurer (1950-1952), Premier and Chief Secretary of Queensland Labor Party 1952-57. In 1964 Gair was elected to the Senate and became Leader of the Democratic Labor Party (1964-1973). In 1974 Gair was appointed Australian Ambassador to Ireland (1974-1976).
