1. Manuscript biographical notes and obituaries collected and compiled by members of the Thurston family. 2. Diary of a voyage from Sydney to England 1854-1855 on the ship "Arabian", with descriptions of Australia and New Zealand, and a diary February-March 1863 of a trip to the Swan River and Mauritius, with a short description of the Swan River settlement. There is also an account of a "Ramble on Rotumah", 1865, and various other notes on that island. 3. Commonplace book, 1840s to 1860s, and a diary of Thurston's voyage from Rotuma to Fiji on the brig "John Wesley" in 1865. 4. Diary and notebook 1874, chiefly regarding the cession of Fiji. 5. Diary, 1894, with comments on law cases and Bishop Patteson's murder.
- Biography/History:

John Bates Thurston arrived in Australia in 1855 and farmed in New South Wales until 1860 when he became Collector to the Linnean Society, Sydney. In 1869, he was appointed acting British consul for Fiji and, in 1872, became Chief Secretary and Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Cakobau Government. Thurston was Governor and High Commissioner of the Western Pacific from 1887 until his death in 1897.
