Chapters copied from Holden's memoirs describe early years at Circular Head, life in Hobart 1894-1902, in Oxford 1902-07, the families Holden, Ware and Farmer, and Una Holden's early life, in which there are anecdotes about the young Bernard Montgomery. Also copied are memoirs of Tasmania 1887-96 written in 1954 by Lettyce Armitage.

Holden was born at Circular Head in northwest Tasmania in 1886. His wife Una Montgomery, was daughter of Henry Montgomery (Anglican Bishop of Tasmania 1889-1901) and sister of the Field Marshall.
