Summary

MS 9325 comprises newspaper reviews from 1964-1999, of the Scarfe's publications; photocopies of correspondence from Jayaprakash Narayan, 1958-1971; two handwritten manuscripts of Wendy's novel The day they shot Edward; and, two typescript drafts of No taste for carnage: Alex Sheppard, a portrait 1913-1997, one annotated in pencil (1 box).

The Acc07.140 instalment comprises drafts, correspondence and newspaper cuttings relating to the Scarfe's books on Jayaprakash Narayan and William Sheppard, and to Labor's Titan: the story of Percy Brookfield, 1878-1921, by Gilbert Giles Roper (2 boxes).

The Acc12.076 instalment comprises notes from interviews, miscellanous correspondence, unpublished material, newpaper cuttings and copies of articles and reviews. The instalment also comprises work books for Wendy's novels: Fishing for strawberries, Jershua Braddon, Painter and The day they shot Edward; a handwritten manuscript of All that grief, co-authored by Wendy and Allan and sources for the Roper-Scarfe biography of Percy Brookfield, Tibor's Titan. Also included is material relating to various biographies and manuscripts of Allan's story Time divides us all (5 boxes).

Biography/History

School teachers, social workers and authors. Allan John and Wendy Elizabeth Scarfe were teachers at Warrnambool Secondary College, Victoria, and have undertaken social work and taught in various Southeast Asian countries. Together they have written several non-fiction books, many relating to India and the time they spent in the Indian village of Bihar. Their joint publications include, A mouthful of petals (1967 and 1972), Tiger on a rein: report on the Bihar famine (1969), J.P., his biography (1975 and 1998), Victims or bludgers?: a poverty inquiry for schools (1981), and, Remembering Jayaprakash (1997). Wendy has also published novels and a book of poetry, Shadow and flowers (1964). They have both contributed to various journals and other literary publications.
