Correspondence, mainly from 1926 to 1930, between Stonehaven and other Governors-General, British diplomats, politicians and friends in England, dealing with his appointment as Governor-General of Australia, the Imperial Conference of 1926, the changing role of the Governor-General, and the political and economic situation in Australia, Great Britain and other parts of the British Empire; correspondence with the King and the King's private secretaries, Lord Stamfordham and Sir Clive Wigram, 1925 to 1937; and correspondence relating to Stonehaven's resignation as Chairman of the Conservative Party in 1936; a memorandum from Lord Forster giving Stonehaven advice about running the household at Government House; memoranda, reports and minutes of the Committee of Imperial Defence 1926-1929; diaries from Sept. and Oct. 1919 dealing with a visit Stonehaven made to Egypt, and the political and industrial situation in England; a diary for 1941 discussing British defence policy, partly politics, and the war situation generally. Newspaper cuttings, mostly relating to Stonehaven's term as Governor-General of Australia.`
- Biography/History:

Stonehaven was born in 1874. In 1896 he joined the Diplomatic Service. From 1910 to 1922 he held the seat of Rugby in the House of Commons and the seat of Ayr Burghs from 1922 to 1925. He was Minister of Transport and Commissioner of Works from 1923 to 1924. Stonehaven was Governor-General of Australia from 1925 to 1931. On his return to Britain he became Chairman of the Conservative Party Organisation until 1936. He died in 1941.
