- All items on this microfilm to be found in the Public Record Office, London.
- All the approximately 400 maps reproduced for this micropublication are held by the Public Record Office. Three criteria for selection were: 1) maps of North America and the West Indies as a whole or specific areas of political jurisdiction within these regions; 2) dated between 1760 and 1783, with some later editions of earlier maps from the same period; 3) manuscript maps, or printed maps with significant manuscript additions. All but 6 of the maps are all listed in: Penfold, Peter A., ed., Maps and Plans in the Public Record Office. Volume 2. America and West Indies. HMSO, 1974, and have been microfilmed in the same geographical order in which they are listed in that volume. (The remaining six items came to light after the publication of that volume.) The full entry for each map in that bibliography has been reproduced in the guide booklet accompanying the microfilm. The geographical order of the maps is as follows: general maps of North America and Canada followed by maps arranged alphabetically by province; general maps of the United States followed by maps arranged alphabetically by state; maps of the West Indies arranged by colony; and an addenda containing maps of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec and Vermont.
- The map include: general small scale maps of large areas; route and river maps; coastal charts and harbour plans; maps showing boundaries between colonial settlement areas and Indian lands; surveys of Loyalist estates; large scale maps of land grants and settlement sites; military maps showing battle plans, fortifications, troop movements; and many others. Cartographers whose work is featured include: Captain James Cook, Captain Thomas Hurd, John Montresor, and Samuel Holland.
- Accompanied by 69-page booklet entitled 'Manuscript maps relating to North America and the West Indies - part 1 the Revolutionary Era', prepared by John Brian Harley and Minda C. Phillips, University of Exeter, and includes sections on provenance; cartographers, cartography and interpretation; contents of the film, index of cartographers; select bibliography; and finding lists.
