Summary

Includes papers relating to colonial emigration; O'Brien's conviction and transportation to Tasmania; imprisonment at Maria Island and Port Arthur; granting of conditional pardon and return to Europe and Irish affairs. Also includes journal written by O'Brien in Tasmania for his family, 1849-53 and letters by O'Brien to Lucy O'Brien, 1849-54.

Biography/History

Politician, 1828-48. Member of the Irish Confederation. In 1848 he was involved in a planned insurrection, was arrested and sentenced to transportation to Tasmania. In 1854 he was granted a conditional pardon and settled in Brussels, returning to Ireland in 1856.
