Taunton spent much of his life in Western Australia. He became a sea-captain on the North West coast during the 1880s, in charge of the revenue cutter "Gertrude" and later the pearling lugger "Expert". He retired to England ca 1888, and died in Surrey in 1900. His memoirs "Australind: Wanderings in Western Australia and the Malay East" were published in 1903.
