John Cumpston was an Australian diplomat and historian. Son of the first Federal Director-General of Health, he was educated at Wesley College and the University of Melbourne where he graduated in law. He entered the Commonwealth Crown Solicitor's Office in 1934 but transferred to the Dept. of External Affairs in Nov. 1935. From 1935-1939 he was in the Dept.'s International Cooperation Secretariat and was one of the compilers of the first reliable maps of the Australian Antarctic Territory. Between 1940-45 he served in the AIF. From 1946-49 he was posted at the Australian legation in Santiago, Chile then from 1950-53 he was official secretary of the Australian High Commission in Wellington. From 1953-58 he was Australian Consul in Noumea. From 1960-69 he was attached to the Dept.'s Historical Section. On retiring from the Dept. of Foreign Affairs in 1969, Cumpston established Roebuck Press and specialised in publishing Australian historical documentary material.
