Professor Davidson is a historian and a former editor of Meanjin and the author of several important books and chapters in Australian cultural history. His recent biography, Lyrebird Rising: Louise Hanson-Dyer of L'Oiseau-Lyre, was a winning title in the 1994 Premier's Literary Awards. Professor Davidson is completing a history of tourism in Australia with Peter Spearritt. He has a keen interest in South Africa; he is writing a history of Grahamstown and teaches a course on the Rise and Fall of Apartheid. He also teaches literature and Australian history. He is also known as an opera critic.
