Summary

Bolton speaks of his background, family, schooling, the Depression, Cambridge, World War II, his job for TRE (Telecommunications Research Establishment) with radar operations, Australia, working at a radar station, detecting bursts from the sun, picking discrete sources of extragalactic radio emissions, receiving radio emissions from a distant galaxy & a supernova, discovering Crab Nebula and the spectrum of Quasar 3C273, his wife & family, works on rain physics, departure to U.S., further discoveries, waiting for the Parkes Telescope to be built, weather modification possibilities, spiral arm structure of our own galaxy, unsuccessful attempt to go to Russia, classic occultation leading to identification of quasars from Parkes, first Radio Source Catalogue of Southern Hemisphere, discovery distant galaxy known as 3C295, doing spectroscopy, detecting polarisation of the extragalactic radio sources (i.e. electron synchrotron radiation), interstellar medium, maser emission, discovery of pulsars in 1968 & the Apollo series.

Biography/History

John Bolton, born in Sheffield, England. A pioneer in using radar as a means to detect any radio emissions coming from distant galaxies. He discovered Crab Nebula, Southern pulsars, identified quasars from Parkes Radio Telescope. From 1969 to 1973 was involved with NASA to prepare the Apollo series.
