Sculptor and art teacher. Thomas (Tom) Dwyer Bass was born in Lithgow, New South Wales in 1916. Bass studied with teacher of drawing Antonio Dattilo-Rubbo and acclaimed sculptor Lyndon Dadswell and went on to graduate from the National Art School in 1948. He completed several works for Australian universities and government, corporate and religious institutions prior to the commission for the lintel sculpture over the main entrance of the National Library of Australia in 1968. Bass was a founding member of the Sculptors Society and held executive positions with the Society from 1951 to 1964. In 1974 he established the Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School in Sydney where he taught the principles of sculpture in a workshop tradition. In 1988 Bass was appointed a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia for service to the arts as a sculptor. In 1996 he published his autobiography with Harris Smart titled, Tom Bass: totem maker (2nd ed., 2006). Bass died in Sydney in February 2010.
