Folkloric recording. Roderick Butler, retired fisherman, talks about his life and recites poems. Born 1916 in Dubbo, N.S.W., he recalls his family background and early years; a story about Ben Hall, the bushranger from his father; his mother's interest in Irish poetry; his earliest memories of schooling; travelling around the bush about 1926; memories of an Aboriginal shearer; early shearing days; shearing stories; recreation at the shearing sheds; working during the Depression;finishing school at Mudgee; his career in the Air Force; types of communication equipment used and planes available; being in Palestine with the Air Force; job as a wireless operator; his war service; Middle East campaign; being transferred to Greece; ill health during the war; his aerodrome control duties; returning to Australia, working as an instructor; leaving the Air Force in 1947.
Butler recalls being one of the pioneers in commercial fishing in the prawn industry of New South Wales; the technique of trawling for prawns and the area covered; government & conservationist controls imposed on the industry; selling through the Sydney Markets; forming a Co-operative with other local commercial fishermen at Evans Heads, N.S.W.; costs incurred and price controls on produce.
