Emeritus Professor Alan George Lewers Shaw, an Australian historian, speaks about his family background; books he read as a child; attending Melbourne Grammar School; studying history at University of Melbourne; visiting Europe in 1934 with his parents; Public Questions Society; thesis on the Irish bishops and Catholic emancipation; studying at Oxford University; lecturing in economic history at University of Sydney; developing the history curriculum at Monash University, and his publications.

Part of a collection of interviews with senior Australian historians, conducted in an attempt to define the influences upon creation of history in Australia.
