Summary

Memoirs entitled "Odds and ends of recollections of my life jotted down for the information of my children as they have recurred to me". Book 1 covers: Vidal's childhood in Devonshire in the late 1830s, including mentions of various family members; life in New South Wales (1840-45) at Minchinbury, Balmain, Carawarago (a cattle station in the Sutton Forest district) and Campbelltown, with descriptions of his family's experiences with bushrangers (including Jacky Jacky), Aborigines and convict servants; the family's return to England; schooling at Eton; and time spent in Paris. Book 2 deals with Vidal's time in the United States; his return to England and time at Cambridge University; and his marriage and life at Eton.

Biography/History

Francis Furse Vidal, eldest son of writer Mary Therese Vidal (Mrs Francis Vidal). Vidal spent five years of his childhood in Australia (1840-1845), upon return to England he went to school at Eton. He worked in a bank for a short time, then spent some time in Paris singing, before being appointed assistant to the general manager of a company in California which supplied water to gold mines. Vidal later returned to England where he studied at Cambridge University and then Cuddeston Theological College.
