All reading rooms will be closed from Christmas Day, reopening on 2 January. Summary

Smith, an Australian historian, talks about the early influence of his foster parents, secondary education, studying at Teachers College, rekindling of his interest in art and his first teaching position in Wagga Wagga, 1936-39. He joined the Communist Party in 1939 and he discusses his views on art and Realism and Idealism, his intellectual development after 1944, time spent in Britain from 1948-51 and leaving the Communist Party in 1951. He then took up a lectureship at the University of Melbourne and discusses the teaching of art at university.
