Dr Specht recalls his family background in England; univerity life & opportunities at Cambridge; arriving in Australia on a post graduate scholarship to the Australian National University (A.C.T.) in 1965; his first trip to Papua New Guinea, Watom Island (Sept.1965). He speaks of Lapita pottery; the history of anthropology at the Australian Museum; his arrival at the Australian Museum at the beginning of 1970s; his involvement with Australian cultural assistance, including South Pacific Cultures Fund; repatriation of cultural material to Pacific; impacts of repatriation; repatriations & cultural exchanges from Museums with Canada, India & New Zealand; Frank Hurley & Allan McCulloch expedition to Papua, 1921-1922; relationships between Museum & Indigenous Australians.
Dr Specht speaks about major indigenous exhibitions at the Australian Museum; developing better relationships with Museum stakeholders; the nature & value of the modern museum; problems of under funding of cultural institutions; Indigenous collections; imperatives for successful museums; problems of building a better Museum for the future; feeding his experience back to a new generation.

Dr Specht was Chief Scientist from 1997-2000 at the Australian Museum, and before that, from 1991, Head of the Division of Anthropology. In Nov. 1995, he was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Humanities, for both his research work in Papua New Guinea, and his cultural heritage work both within Australia & beyond. Until 2002, he was a member of the Humanities and Creative Arts Advisory Committee of the Australian Research Council.
