Briggs speaks of his grandfather's arrival in Young and his two gold-digging partners and their competition with the Chinese for the local goldfields, how the Chinese broke the Treaty of Tientsin and the British retaliation, how the Chinese had a habit of claim jumping which caused trouble in 1861, the early names for the town of Young, how his father started barbering at age 13 and how he lived as a barber in Young practicing until he was age 92, recalls the tent city at Petticoat Flat and how the women helped drive off the Chinese when the men went to the new gold diggings just out of town, the prejudice against the Chinese result in several riots, how there was no law and order resulting in murders, fights and vigilantes, there was no religious clash with the Chinese, by 1870 with the end of the gold rush people stayed on giving Young a population at that time of 792, how the town developed in the 1880s, the drought of the 1890's followed by further development after 1900, how wheat, electricity and the Catholic Mission were established by 1894.
Briggs discusses the local towns and the influences of the Aborigines and the Irish, discusses his understanding of astronomical and astrological influences on mankind and the evidence of other non-Aboriginal civilisations in Australia, the psychic nature of dreams, weather forecasting by Indigo Jones and the influence of the planets, recounts his school days and his family life particularly his brothers, how his father styled ladies' hair and how the business expanded in the 1920s, his army service, how he came to marry, working as a hospital wardsman and work in the barber shop, his children, how he and his wife have managed financially, how his children are doing now.
