- Paper presented at: "44th Annual Conference of the Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society, University of Sydney, 23-25 January 2000".
- "South Africa is the world's second largest exporter of steaming coal, behind Australia, and is a competitive supplier to both Asian and European consumers. It owes this competitiveness to its low labor costs, abundant reservces and low ocean frieght rates. South African suppliers face a number of challenges over the next decade, including the need to improve productivity in order to meet competition from eastern European coal suppliers in European markets. ABARE's Global Trade and Environment Model (GTEM) is used in this paper to examine the responses of South African coal exporters to two scenarios and the implications for Australia."
