- Hildebrand Bowman is a pseudonym and authorship has been variously attributed to midshipman on the Resolution during Cook's 2nd voyage, John Elliott (1759-1834) and Robert Boyne Home (1713-1786).

Nan Kivell (no. 1778/4); also stamped 'Cranbury Park', suggesting prior ownership by English MP, Thomas Dummer (1739–1781) FRS or else his widow, who later married Cook's portraitist, Sir Nathaniel Dance-Holland (1735–1811).
