Emeritus Professor Tony Vinson, academic and prison system reformer recalls his start as a Parole Officer at Long Bay Goal (late 1950s), being one of only 3 such officers who covered the whole state of N.S.W.; completing a Masters degree in Sociology; his job as a tutor and lecturer at the University of New South Wales where he designed a course in social work; his work as as Senior Lecturer in Social Policy at the University of Sydney; setting up the Bureau of Crime Statistics & Research (1971), using the Bureau's collection of data to monitor the fairness of the justice system; his appointment as Foundation Professor of the newly established Newcastle Medical School (mid 1970s), where he introduced an innovative style of medical education involving a social & individualistic approach to Medicine.
Vinson speaks about his appointment as Director of the Dept. of Corrective Services, N.S.W.(1978-1981); the implementation of the recommendations of the Nagle Royal Commission into N.S.W. Prisons; his position as Professor of Social Work at the University of N.S.W. (early 1980s) and that of Dean of the Faculty of Professional Studies; his more recent work with Catholic Social Service organizations & his chairmanship of the Independent Enquiry into Public Education in N.S.W.
