The bulk of the papers in MS 9385 comprises 84 volumes, which record in diary format, a wide range of Bomford's life experiences including the major events of his professional life, among them secondments to surveys in Tanganyika (1953-1955), South Georgia (1955-1956) and Australia (1958-1960). These handwritten diaries are supplemented by 40 typed "illustrated diaries" produced on his return from numerous trips. The remainder of the collection comprises photograph albums, family correspondence, certificates and reprints of articles by Bomford. There is a catalogue with colour plates titled "Tony Bomford's seventeen hand-knotted rugs, made in Canberra, Australia 1974-1988" (21 boxes, 1 carton, 18 fol. boxes).
The Acc09.010 instalment comprises a lever arch file titled "Old South Georgia letters", on topics including preparations for SGS 1955-1956, technical detail of finalising DOS 610, Carse's abortive planning for an Allardyce-Salvesen Expedition, and his Ducloz Head "experiment in solitude". The letters have been numbered and indexed, and a copy of the index placed in the folder (1 box).

Anthony Gerald Bomford joined the British Army from school in 1944, following his father into the Royal Engineers Survey Corps. After graduating from Cambridge in engineering and mathematics, Bomford was seconded from the Army to the British Overseas Survey to Tanganyika (Tanzania), the South Georgia Survey (as Chief Surveyor) and the Australian Army Survey Corps, before moving to Australia in 1961 as a senior surveyor with the Division of National Mapping in Canberra. He was appointed Director of National Mapping in 1977 and retired in 1982.
