Gamboa speaks of his background and upbringing in the Philippines, being stationed in Australia after recruitment into the US Army during the World War II; in 1943 he met and married an Australian woman, Joyce Cain; his experiences in the US Army; on discharge from the US Army, in Melbourne, he was officially notified that he could not remain in Australia and, despite being married and having one son with another baby on the way, he had to leave the country under the White Australia Policy; the action taken against him was in keeping with government policy, enthusiastically enforced by Immigration Minister, Arthur Calwell, and supported by Prime Minister Ben Chifley; his reactions to being expelled from Australia when he sought readmission in 1949 to visit his wife and two children, the case of "Sergeant Gamboa" became a 'cause celebre' for those opposed to the White Australia Policy.
Gamboa speaks of the intervention of General MacArthur, for whom he had worked in the US Army and eventually the issue was raised in the United Nations; the Labor government of the day refused to bow to pressure and it was only when this government was defeated at the December 1949 polls that the new government, headed by Robert Menzies with Harold Holt as Immigration Minister, allowed Gamboa to be readmitted; his family life and working life since then; return visits to his family in the Philippines; life after his retirement to Queensland.
